Reducing overthinking

Interrupt thought loops: recognise rumination, return attention and translate open questions into concrete steps.

By · from years of consultation and podcast practice

What may be happening

Rumination resembles problem-solving but repeatedly revisits the same questions without producing new information or action.

Trying to force a thought away often makes it more prominent.

What provides orientation

The goal is not an empty mind, but a shift from unproductive repetition to observation, decision or deliberate pause.

Strong persistent rumination may be part of significant mental strain and deserve professional support.

Manuel's practical tip

Manuel's practical tip

Give rumination an entry question: “Is there new information or a new action?” Without either, the thought does not need another lap.

Try it this way:

  1. 1

Write the recurring thought in exactly one sentence.

  2. 2

Mark N for new information, A for possible action or R for repetition.

  3. 3

For R: schedule a later time and deliberately switch to a physical activity.

What may help right now

  1. 1

    Name the loop

Say to yourself, “I am going in circles”, rather than reviewing every thought again.

  2. 2

    Ask a test question

Is there new information or one concrete action available now?

  3. 3

    Limit the time

Write down the topic and give it a later window of no more than twenty minutes.

  4. 4

    Anchor attention

Bring your senses to a physical activity or your immediate surroundings.

  5. 5

    Choose a next step

If something can change, define one action; otherwise practise leaving the question open for now.

What you can do today

  • Write the recurring thought in one sentence.
  • Move for ten minutes without consuming more content.
  • Choose: act, schedule or release for now.

What matters in the longer term

Useful reflection has a beginning and an end. A brief written review is often clearer than hours of internal checking.

When worry significantly affects sleep and daily life, professional help can offer additional strategies.

Questions that may help

  • Is this thinking producing anything new?
  • Which action is actually possible?
  • Which uncertainty am I trying to remove?

What is less likely to help

  • Forcing thoughts away.
  • Seeking the same reassurance repeatedly.
  • Mistaking rumination for thorough preparation.
