From Manuel’s podcast and consultation knowledge
Making a difficult decision
Decide step by step: compare options, include your values and carry uncertainty responsibly.
What may be happening
Difficult decisions often connect several legitimate needs, so every option may contain both gain and loss.
The wish for complete certainty keeps thought moving even when some information can arise only through action.
What provides orientation
A sound decision is understandable and responsible, not guaranteed to be free of consequences.
Far-reaching legal, medical or financial choices require appropriate expert advice.
Manuel's practical tip
Manuel's practical tip
Sit in three different chairs in turn: visionary, realist and constructive critic. Changing position helps you consider ideas, feasibility and risks without making them compete all at once.
Try it this way:
- 1
As the visionary, ask only: What might be possible if I did not have to evaluate it yet?
- 2
As the realist, ask: What could a feasible first step look like?
- 3
As the critic, ask: What needs safeguarding or improving — and which idea remains afterwards?
What may help right now
- 1
Define the question
State exactly what you are deciding and what lies outside this decision.
- 2
Weight criteria
Choose three important criteria and put them in order.
- 3
Use three perspectives
View each option factually, emotionally and from the position of your future self.
- 4
Distinguish consequences
Separate likely outcomes from fears that are merely conceivable.
- 5
Close the process
Set a deadline and decide with the information available then.
What you can do today
- Write the decision in one clear sentence.
- Name the most important criterion.
- Check which part could become a small trial.
What matters in the longer term
After a suitable interval, review the quality of your process as well as the outcome.
Decision skill grows when you learn from experience without judging yourself unfairly in hindsight.
Questions that may help
- Which values are in tension?
- Which consequence is likely?
- What would I advise a good friend?
What is less likely to help
- Collecting endless new opinions.
- Considering only the most comfortable short-term option.
- Constantly reopening a completed choice.
