Dealing with anxiety
Anxiety tries to protect you from danger, yet it can become very loud when no clear solution is visible. You do not have to force it away before you can act.
What happens when you feel anxious?
Anxiety focuses attention on a possible threat. Thoughts, physical sensations and the urge to escape or control everything can reinforce one another.
The feeling is real even when the feared outcome is uncertain. A useful first step is to distinguish the present moment from a possibility created by the mind.
Why can anxiety persist?
Avoidance gives short-term relief, but it may also teach anxiety that a situation cannot be tolerated. High expectations and earlier difficult experiences can strengthen this cycle.
The answer is not to overwhelm yourself. Safety grows through small, suitable experiences and a kinder relationship with yourself.
What may help right now
- 1
Return to the present
Name five things you can see and notice your feet on the ground. This brings attention back to what is here now.
- 2
Separate feeling from fact
Say “I notice anxiety” rather than “Something terrible will happen”. You acknowledge the feeling without turning it into a prediction.
- 3
Settle your breathing
Breathe calmly without forcing it. Allow the out-breath to become soft and slightly longer.
- 4
Choose one small courageous step
Find an action that is challenging but manageable. Courage is not the absence of fear; it is conscious action while fear is present.
- 5
Talk to someone
A trusted person or professional support can help you organise your thoughts and keep avoidance from taking over.
What you can do today
- Write a fear next to the facts you can verify.
- Take a ten-minute break from news and other anxiety-provoking input.
- Ask someone you trust for a calm conversation.
What matters in the longer term
Notice which situations you increasingly avoid and which thoughts recur. Choose steps that stretch you without overwhelming you.
Recurring panic, severe anxiety or major limitations deserve professional assessment. Seeking help is responsible, not a failure.
Questions that may help
- What is verifiably true now, and what is a fear?
- Which small step feels possible today?
- What would I say to someone I care about?
- Where is avoidance increasingly limiting my life?
What is less likely to help
- Judging yourself for being afraid.
- Constantly checking physical sensations.
- Avoiding every difficult situation indefinitely.
