Overcoming procrastination

Understand and change procrastination: reduce barriers, make starting easier and create visible reliable progress.

What may be happening

Procrastination is not simply laziness. It often regulates uncomfortable feelings such as overwhelm, boredom, uncertainty or fear of evaluation in the short term.

The immediate relief is later paid for with time pressure and self-criticism.

What provides orientation

Change often begins more easily with the environment and the size of the entry step than with harsher judgement.

If organisation and starting remain difficult across many areas of life, professional assessment may be useful.

What may help right now

  1. 1

    Identify the barrier

Ask whether ambiguity, size, missing material or fear is blocking the start.

  2. 2

    Make it smaller

Define a visible action of five to ten minutes rather than a large project label.

  3. 3

    Set a start cue

Connect beginning to a time, place and prepared work material.

  4. 4

    Make distraction harder

Put the phone out of reach and close applications you do not need.

  5. 5

    Make completion visible

Mark the small step complete and only then decide the next one.

What you can do today

  • Open the document you need.
  • Work for just five focused minutes.
  • Prepare tomorrow’s first step visibly.

What matters in the longer term

Reliability grows through realistic repetition. Include buffers and divide long projects into reviewable stages.

Assess the system rather than your character: what made starting easier or harder?

Questions that may help

  • Which feeling am I avoiding at the start?
  • What is the smallest visible action?
  • Which distraction can I remove beforehand?

What is less likely to help

  • Waiting for motivation.
  • Naming the task only as a large project.
  • Abandoning the plan after one poor day.
